(Re)Dressed to Impress at the Grammy's

When this 1920s-inspired Sue Wong dress came in the store, it was quite difficult to keep from coveting it. Between the beautifully draped silk chiffon, the medallion-shaped beading and the dusty ballerina pink color, it's not tough to see what made me fall so hard for it. I don't like to brag about my psychic abilities, but, let me tell you, I knew from the moment that I saw this dress that it was destined for great things. I could not have been more correct.

Previously owned by a singer and performer, it must have, "had the music in it," so to speak, which would explain how it found its way to music in its second life. When Lori came in looking for something to wear to attend the Grammy's, it took less than a minute for her to find this dress. The attraction was immediate and magnetic. From the moment she put on the dress, there was no question that this was what she would wear to walk down the Red Carpet.

Lori also ended up finding a handful of beautiful evening dresses at our store for the rest of her weekend at the Grammy's, one of which included the Scala dress shown below. Like what you see? Come in and get Re(Dressed) to impress for your next event--think Bat Mitzvahs, Summer weddings and all your party needs.

FROCK 'n' ROLL!

Erin, about to go dancing in her stunning 1970s dress, purchased in our store

The Magnetic Fields once sang that, "Nothing matters when you're dancing." A charming sentiment, but, also, one that is totally and completely incorrect. I mean, don't get me wrong, there a lot of things that tend to lose their importance when you're dancing--things like, what you're planning to eat for breakfast or how exactly you're planning on making it through a day of work after a night of dancing. But you know what does matter when you're dancing? Fashion. Yes, fashion. Twisting and twirling on the dancefloor isn't quite the same without a fabulous dress swishing and swaying with your every motion. And when you find do find that perfect dancing dress, the spotlight can't help but find you. People can't help but notice you frocking and rolling all night long.

If, like Erin was, you're on the hunt for the dancing dress of your dreams, stop by our store and take a look through our wide selection of vintage and modern. Do you follow us from afar or simply can't wait another moment to check out our stellar dress selection? Check out our Etsy shop for some fabulous vintage options.

Introducing...ReDress Boston Vintage (ONLINE NOW)

ReDress Boston has recently time traveled back to the 70s with an influx of vintage clothing from a few estates, which inspired us to start an Etsy store called:
ReDressBostonVintage.
For those who are not familiar with Etsy, it is an e-commerce website focused on handmade orvintage items. Each seller opens a store and sells items for a price (so no bidding like eBay). Visit our Etsy store at redressbostonvintage.etsy.comHere is a sampling of items:
daddy front.jpgspring dress side.jpgmel dress front.jpg
The 70s sometimes feels like the decade that style forgot because there was no homogenous look. It was the end of haute couture, with pret-a-porter or ready to wear becoming the norm. Women wanted to choose their own style, so it was a bit of a schizophrenic fashion era with such wide ranging looks from hot pants, platform shoes and bell bottoms to lacy blouses, caftans and peasant skirts. Think retromania with romantic and ethnic looks juxtaposed against the glitzy and frivolous. Tie dye, beadcraft, crochet and macrame stand out as decorative motifs. Of course, the practical working woman wanted seasonless dressing, with mix and match pieces that were in wash and wear synthetic knits for reasonable prices. More dash for less cash.
We will soon be adding pieces to ReDressBostonVintage from the 50s and 60s, but you can see these items in person in the brick and mortar store. Come in and time travel to the past or stay in the present with our great selection of spring designer and contemporary pieces.

Time to Banish the Down Coats

One of our favorite customers, Lauren, and our fearless leader, Therese, show off their vintage spring coats, purchased at ReDress

The temperatures are slowly creeping upwards and the snow mounds crowding sidewalks and parking lots are slowing melting down. Each day brings a few more minutes of light. It's the perfect time to bring a little something bright into your personal style universe and banish the drab down coats to the back of the closet. What are you waiting for? Ditch that down and run on down to ReDress to pick up the perfect replacement. Think: vintage tweed in radiant orchid, floral buttons and gorgeous rainy day gear.

Recycle, ReDress and Reimagine

Natalia showing off her turquoise Anthropologie mini skirt, purchased at ReDress

They say that envy is a negative emotion. I'm not so sure I agree; it can also be a very motivational emotion. Regardless, there are some situations in which it's pretty much impossible not to feel at least a little envy. Like, for example, when you see someone walking an adorable newborn puppy or eating a delicious decadent chocolate truffle with a rich, creamy center. That's totally normal. For me, there are few people I envy quite as much as those with effortlessly chic and well-defined personal style. You know who I mean--the sort of women for whom getting dressed is a lot more like breathing than solving an algebra equation. Natalia, the long-time ReDress customer shown above, is one of those ever-so-lucky people.

When Natalia came in the other day wearing this gorgeous turquoise mini skirt, purchased here at the store, I was absolutely delighted to see that she had chosen to pair it with short red cowboy boots. I must admit, it is not a pairing that I would have likely ever conceived, but it worked perfectly. It was an expert blend of boldness and consistency, a look simultaneously eye-catching and true to her own personal brand of western-inspired glam. Besides the gorgeous Anthropologie skirt featured in the photo, Natalia has purchased an incredible range of stylish pieces here at the store, including a perfect pair of Old Gringo cowboy boots and an Artisan De Luxe embroidered spring scarf.

Natalia has always taken an interest in cultivating her personal style, but revealed to me that it was only very recently that she was able to truly shop in a way that felt "guilt-free." She explained that she had always felt badly about the wastefulness associated with mainstream retail shopping, from the resources involved in production to the under-utilization of many of the things she purchased. However, she was absolutely thrilled when ReDress opened and offered her the opportunity to both, part with old clothes and acquire new ones, in an eco-friendly way. A frequent consignor and customer, Natalia completely embodies the ethic of consignment shopping by consistently recycling her barely-worn clothing and ReDress-ing in previously loved, new-to-her pieces.

The Immortal Life of Secondhand Clothing

Ellen looking gorgeous with her prom date in the 1980s

They say that, in fashion, what goes around, comes around. Styles that captivated generations past will be revived and loved once again by their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The romantic lace maxis made popular by Gunne Sax in the 1970s become the floaty, bohemian Free People creations of today. Elizabeth + James draws inspiration from Oleg Cassini's 1960s bell-sleeved beauties. Nowhere, however, is the saying more true than in secondhand fashion. What goes around does, indeed, come around. And around. And around again. The same dress that you bought in a fit of excitement during your days of study abroad in Europe might go on to bring someone else infinite joy on their graduation day and someone else incredible confidence on a very special first date. And all of that, courtesy of vintage and consignment stores, which helped to find it a loving home with each of these women at the perfect moment in their individual lives.

Here at ReDress, we facilitate those kinds of special connections between clothing and women on a daily basis. But to be witness to a piece's broader journey, is particularly rare and special. And that is exactly what happened in the case of this vintage Morton Myles dress.

"That's my prom dress!" Ellen exclaimed, pointing up at the one-of-a-kind vintage dress on display in our window. The dress in question had been brought in just a few days earlier by a vintage-loving consignor. Ellen explained that she had sold her dress years ago to a vintage store, long before ReDress had ever even opened. And now here it was, gracing the secondhand market once more, looking for a fabulous third home. She was kind enough to bring in some of her prom photos for us to share with all of you, alongside the amazing story of her dress. If you think you might be the perfect third home for this beauty, stop by and try it on! It's a Morton Myles, size M and is priced at $178 in our store.

The moral of the story? If you want your once-cherished clothing to have more lives than a cat, there's only one thing to do--consign! We are currently accepting spring transitional pieces and would love to help your clothes and accessories find true love once more. Call us at 617.879.0037 or e-mail redressboston@gmail.com to make an appointment.

Little-known Fact: "I Will Love Again," is actually sung from the perspective of a consigned dress
